The Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee voted Thursday along party lines to freeze income eligibility under the homestead tax credit at the current level rather than allow it to go up with inflation. So while wealthy contributors continue to reap the benefits of tax cuts, the poorest of the poor are expected to suffer the "shared sacrifice" in Fitzwalkerstan.
The credit goes to homeowners and renters who earn less than $24,500 a year. It began with the 2010 tax year and more than 247,000 taxpayers claimed the credit, costing the state $128 million.
